THE
SHOP INC. manufactures and resurfaces precision clipper honing plates
for all clipper sharpening machines. The discs feature a surface more accurate
than is currently available elsewhere. We have developed a scraping process
to finish clipper honing discs to guarantee a near perfectly true plane of
the disc surface which is not possible by the normal lathing practice alone.
The honing surface is smooth after scraping, no 'phonograph record' type grooves,
or high and low areas left from lathe machining. What is between machining
grooves on a lathe cut surface is air, not aluminum, reducing the effective
grinding area of the surface. The moving, single point tool contact of lathing
does not ensure a true plane of the finish as does scraping. In contrast,
the scraper contacts the width of the honing band and removes material without
moving until full contact is achieved. This eliminates any fluctuations in
the surface and validates it true. We then condition the scraped surface with
the same size grit that will be used for sharpening. This even, true surface
holds every grain of grit at the same level so it contacts the blade being
sharpened with equal pressure, resulting in the maximum percentage of the
grit fully and equally grinding. All the grit contacts the blade being sharpened
since there are no voids for it to fall into. The result is a precision hollow
grind with even tooth contact which means excellent cutting and maximum blade
life for your customers.
A solid scraped surface holds more grit and lasts longer than a lathe cut surface. A honing disc is gradually worn by grit granules that are able to roll in any grooves and low areas of the surface. This abrasion slowly wears the low areas wider and lower with each blade sharpened. Our solid surface maintains its integrity longer than a lathe cut grooved surface since there are no low areas or thin and weak peaks to wear away easily. As a result, our discs wear in an even, dished pattern in the center where the most grinding takes place, with no random high or low spots that represent a surface that was not true to begin with.
Our secondary scraping process also guarantees accurate duplication
of the hollow grind angle and location so that there is no
variance in the pattern ground on blades from disc to disc or after a resurfacing.
The accuracy of our referencing system enables us to resurface a disc by only
having to remove a maximum of .005" per side. This allows us to resurface
each side 25 times before the disc needs replacing. As many as 50,000 blade
sets can be sharpened per disc in this length of time.
Discs manufactured by THE SHOP, INC. feature a 3 1/4" wide sharpening surface on both sides. All sharpening is done at this outer diameter where the grinding speed is the greatest and most constant. Minimal variance in the amount of hollow grind from the outer radius to the inner radius is another advantage of the narrow band width. The short stroking distance also aids in precise blade control.
All discs are dynamically balanced. They are re-balanced after each resurfacing to maintain smooth operation.
Even spreading of oil and grit is required to achieve a uniform
recharging of any disc. We manufacture a motorized grit spreader which, combined
with our oil applicator, leaves the distribution of oil and grit more uniform
than can be accomplished by any rubbing method. Since our surface is smooth,
no time or grit is wasted by rubbing and filling grooves or voids where the
grit
must be stacked on itself to reach the blade surface. This unstable piling
promotes rolling of the grit, resulting in disc wear and uneven grinding.
We know how frustrating and expensive it is to receive a disc that does not work well, even after proper seasoning. We developed our secondary scraping process to solve this problem. Each disc is also seasoned and blade-tested so that you are ensured that the surface you receive will make good blades. Guaranteed.
